Who we are
Theatre Makers is created and run by two collaborators, Betty Sweetlove and Jasmine Story.
We are passionate about creating space for inclusive and experimental theatre opportunities and developing new work in Central Australia.
We work with over 10 artist-facilitators and in partnership with Incite Arts and Red Hot Arts.
Theatre Makers 2024 is made possible thanks to Creative Australia and the NT Government via Arts NT.
Betty Sweetlove (she/her)
Betty grew up in London and the south east of England, and has lived in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) since 2015. She is a performer and playwright whose work engages with history, place, power dynamics and community. She is interested in making theatre that intervenes in the historical record and creates moments of refuge and joy. As a writer, her recent work includes Alien (with Ciella Williams & Rachael Chisholm, in development); Lurker (in development) and The Nestmakers (Desert Festival, 2022) for which she was awarded an Arts NT Varuna Fellowship. She has written new monologues for young people for Marian St Theatre, and her monologue Swallows was published by Currency Press. With training in the movement practices of the Suzuki Actor Training method, butoh and the Viewpoints, Betty enjoys devising and facilitating in collaborative settings. Recent acting credits include Floopy's Fuzzled Feelings (2024, dir. Jac Marriott), REBIRTH by Zen Zen Zo (2022, dir. Gina Tay Limpus), Zen Zen Zo’s Romeo and Juliet (2022, dir. Drew der Kinderen), COLLIDE (2021) with Browns Mart Theatre, and The Maids (2021) at Totem Theatre.
Jasmine Story (she/her)
Jazzy is a playwright, producer and performer who has collaborated in numerous local theatre pieces in Mparntwe/Alice Springs. In 2024 she participated in the Playlab Transmission program for Regional Playwrights and began developing her new work in development, SMOKO. In collaboration with Lili Favrel, Jasmine co-wrote and performed children’s psycho-education theatre piece, Floopy’s Fuzzled Feelings (2023), that is currently available for schools bookings. The show uses theatre to teach emotional literacy and regulation techniques for young people. Jasmine previewed her work in development Claypans & Chill at Thorn & Thistle in the Desert Festival (2022). Jasmine also performed in the Arelhe Urrperle Project with Erth Physical & Visual Theatre Inc (2024), Gina Tay Limpus' physical theatre piece Skelter (2023) and Betty Sweetlove’s debut production of The Nestmakers at the Desert Festival (2022). Jasmine also worked with the NT Writers Centre to co-facilitate a writing program for year 10 students at Centralian Senior College (2024). Jasmine is a counsellor whose interest in mental health infuses into her writing. She is interested in using theatre to craft transformation in people’s lives, build community and share stories through the emotive force of theatre.
